Firearm Safety Rules

SAFETY

Safety is something to THINK about—before, during, and after using a firearm. We also TALK about it. And, we PRACTICE it at all times!

While on the firing line, students are closely monitored by the instructor, and the student/instructor ratio will never exceed 2/1 for beginning shooters. Live-fire training will not be conducted for anyone under the age of 18 unless the student is accompanied by a participating parent or guardian.

The live fire portion of our marksmanship courses will be conducted in accordance with the NRA-affiliate rules governing the range facility (those rules will be fully discussed with each student prior to using the range).

When handling firearms, there are routine things that must become habit for safety's sake.

THE NRA RULES FOR HANDLING FIREARMS MUST BE COMMITTED TO MEMORY AND FOLLOWED AT ALL TIMES:

1. ALWAYS keep the gun pointed in a safe direction.

2. ALWAYS keep your finger off the trigger (and out of the trigger guard) until ready to shoot.

3. ALWAYS keep the gun unloaded until ready to use. (NOTE: if a gun is being used for self defense, it is "in use" and should be loaded.)

There are more safety guidelines noted in the NRA textbook, but these are the big three that must become habit in order to handle firearms safely. Students will be provided with their own copy of a DVD on range-safety.
