Water Quality

A sailor can receive a hefty fine if he gets caught emptying his 5-gallon holding tank in protected waters. What happens when a local government gets caught dumping several million gallons of raw sewage into the same water?

The city has until January 10 to present reports on the “total estimated spill volume” to the Florida Department of Environmental Protection. Fort Lauderdale Mayor Dean Trantalis said the amount of sewage that spilled is high.

“There’s no exact number but it’s clearly over 100 million gallons,” Trantalis said.

One of government’s primary duties should be proper maintenance of the infrastructure. This duty is sadly lacking in many jurisdictions.

When it comes to correcting the underlying problem, what kind of remedy do remedial fines provide?
