Recall Notice

Springfield Armory Initiates Recall on 3.3 XD-S 9mm and 3.3 XD-S .45 ACP

Springfield Armory® is initiating this voluntary safety recall to upgrade 3.3 XD-S™ 9mm and 3.3 XD-S™ .45ACP pistols with new components, which eliminate the possibility of a potentially dangerous condition. We want to emphasize that no injuries have been reported to date.

Springfield has determined that under exceptionally rare circumstances, some 3.3 XD-S™ 9mm and .45ACP caliber pistols could experience an unintended discharge during the loading process when the slide is released, or could experience a double-fire when the trigger is pulled once. The chance of these conditions existing is exceptionally rare, but if they happen, serious injury or death could occur. For information, see Springfield Recall Registration.

Top 10 Reasons Why the U.S. Should Not Sign the U.N. Arms Trade Treaty

The U.S. has announced that it will sign the U.N. Arms Trade Treaty (ATT) as soon as it is satisfactorily translated into all official U.N. languages. This could happen as early as August 28, when the Russian-language translation is scheduled to be completed. It is more likely to happen on September 25 at a high-profile signing ceremony currently being planned at the U.N.

Head Injuries

Experienced sailors are aware of the potential consequence of an accidental gybe, when someone doesn't duck in time. Head injury can be the result.

What about the potential consequence of the random violence that we have seen recently from feral teenagers engaging in what has become known as the "knockout game?" Head injury is usually the result.

Head injuries are a particularly dangerous form of injury that often require hospital care. What should you do if someone receives a head injury?

Dealing with head injuries is the topic of discussion over at The Survival Doctor website.

Violence

Proximate Cause

Social upheaval not only tends to follow a pattern, but has an identifiable DNA. The recent 'random' acts of violence 89-year-old Delbert Belton Murdered27-year-old Nurse, David Santucci, and 23-year-old Student, Chris Lane have a pattern, as pointed out by The Conservative Treehouse.

We know the truth about the Zimmerman-Martin encounter from having seen the evidence presented in a court of law. And yet, we still see an urban legend spreading, like a virus, thanks to a media that refuses to admit that they bought a phony narrative. Like any unrepentant lie, it just keeps getting bigger and more consequential. "Media" DNA can be found at all of these crime scenes.

Zimmerman Trial

An expensive undertaking

What is the cost of a trial that should have never happened? According to the Orlando Sentinel:

The five-week trial of Neighborhood Watch volunteer George Zimmerman — which ended in his acquittal in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin — cost the public at least $902,000.....

The Zimmerman trial totals are based, in part, on estimates and do not include the cost of the criminal investigation or any pretrial costs. For example, Special Prosecutor Angela Corey did not provide any information about her costs....

The trial costs also do not include what Zimmerman and his lawyers spent.

Self Defense

"Stopping power" explained

While we're still considering the hazards of "brandishing", here's a good tie-in to "stopping power" from Richard Mann:

Self Defense

Why brandishing, shooting to wound, and warning shots are BAD ideas

Some of the very worst advice is about how to avoid the legal fallout of self defense by using a firearm in a non-lethal way, such as brandishing, shooting to wound rather than to kill, and firing one or more warning shots to scare off an attacker.

In short, don't draw your firearm until you honestly believe you are in immediate danger of death or great bodily harm. And if that is truly your belief, you don't have the leisure of brandishing, shooting to wound, or firing a warning shot.

At that crucial moment, you should do what you've been trained to do: stop the attack by shooting your attacker center mass until the danger is gone.

Then, if you end up in a courtroom, you can honestly and with conviction look the jury in the eyes and say, "I feared for my life. I had no choice."

Gun Handling

Manipulating a Semi-Auto

Pistol manipulation requires efficiency and consistency, especially under pressure, and the basics must be mastered to properly handle malfunctions.

ClearingHandgun

The key to operating a pistol properly is consistency. Correct technique ensures predictable results, such as safety and efficiency. Straying from proper technique opens the door for trouble. It’s the small details, such as always maintaining a proper grip on your handgun, that make big differences.

In all situations, the pistol should stay in the shooting hand. Be sure to use a proper grip and point the muzzle in a safe direction with your finger clear of the trigger guard. This allows you to operate the pistol’s controls, such as safety or de-cocking levers and magazine release. If for some reason you transfer the pistol to your support hand, you should still use the correct grip. Using an improper grip can lead to the muzzle pointing in an unsafe direction or a finger ending up on the trigger. Consistency ensures safety.

Manipulations are split into two categories—administrative and functional. Loading, unloading and checking the status of a pistol are administrative actions. Functional manipulations keep the pistol running, and include reloading and clearing malfunctions. During all manipulations the trigger finger is off the trigger and clear of the trigger guard.

A lot of people take loading, unloading or checking the pistol’s status for granted, but these are very important skills. These actions must to be performed safely, plus they are the foundation for all other manipulations. Once you learn to load and unload you have all the skills required to reload and perform malfunction clearances.

To load, extend the pistol out in front of you with the muzzle pointing downward in a “low-ready” position. The support hand acquires the magazine with the index finger aligned along the front with the tip touching the top round. With a finger on the top round you can physically confirm it is a loaded magazine and that the top round is in position. If the round is sticking partially out, which would prevent you from inserting and seating the magazine into the pistol, the finger either pushes it back in or flips it out of the way. The basepad of the magazine should be against the heel of the hand so you can aggressively seat it into the pistol’s magazine well. Then, bring the magazine up to the pistol and index the back of the magazine against the back of the pistol’s magazine well. This is a positive index that you can feel, and it’s far easier than trying to stick the magazine in straight. Once you hit the index, align the magazine and seat it into the pistol firmly with the heel of the hand. Finally, cycle the slide aggressively by grasping the slide between the fingertips and heel of the hand in a C-clamp grip, making sure not to cover or block the ejection port.

Step one of unloading is to remove the magazine. One way to hold the magazine is by placing it in the pinky finger of the primary hand. This frees up the support hand to cycle the slide, and provides instant access, which comes into play when clearing malfunctions in a lethal encounter. Cycle the slide aggressively three times. Three times is the magic number, and again comes into play for malfunctions. The final step is a press-check to confirm the chamber is clear.

Even with pistols that have a loaded chamber indicator I perform a “press-check” to ensure a round is chambered by pressing the slide slightly to the rear. I grab the slide, then slip my hand forward, putting the thumb on the rear serrations for extra grip, and crack it open to visually inspect the chamber. You can also bring the support hand under the pistol, pinching the slide between thumb and first finger, and press it rearward. After the press-check engage the safety or de-cock if required. Finally, especially for self-defense use, top off the magazine by replacing the round you just put into the chamber.

The sequence to load/unload or run a system-check always begins with the magazine—inserting, removing—and ends by checking the chamber. Maintaining this sequence reduces your chances of making a mistake. Remember, consistency is the key. Consistency is also critical to operating the pistol’s safety or de-cocking device.

With most pistols the slide will lock open when the last round is fired, letting you know it’s time to reload. Step one is to get your finger off the trigger and clear of the trigger guard. For defensive applications keep the pistol up and on target during functional manipulations. This allows you to maintain visual contact with the threat, see your handgun and cuts out wasted, unnecessary motion, which makes you more efficient. Press the mag release. On most pistols the magazine will drop free but with some it may be necessary for the support hand to strip the magazine out. For defensive applications that magazine is empty and useless so we drop it to the ground.

The support hand acquires and seats the fresh magazine. Once the magazine is seated, chamber a round by cycling the slide aggressively. Do not use the slide lock as a release unless your pistol specifically recommends this method. First, it’s a slide lock, not a release. Also, cycling the action brings it back that extra distance that ensures it slams into battery under full spring pressure. For defensive situations, when you’re under stress, that slide lock can be difficult to find. Also, some pistols don’t have an external lock, which means cycling the slide is the only way to chamber a round. I always manipulate the pistol in a manner that works with any handgun I may be shooting.

Malfunctions come in a variety of flavors. First though, keep in mind that a malfunction is something you can correct to get the pistol running again. A jam usually requires time and tools to clear.

The most common reason for pressing the trigger and not getting a bang is no round in the chamber due to an unseated magazine, which is the reason for the Tap & Rack drill. Tap the magazine to ensure it is seated. After seating the magazine, cycle the slide to chamber a fresh round. This sequence also clears Type II malfunctions, commonly called a “stove-pipe.” This approach is simple and consistent with all other manipulations.

If the Tap & Rack doesn’t fix the problem, you’re probably facing a Type III malfunction, commonly called a “double-feed.” You need to unload the pistol and then load it. Hit the magazine release and strip it out of the pistol. The magazine goes into the pinky finger of the strong hand, while the support hand cycles the slide three times. Once the slide goes into battery, use the magazine to load the pistol. Remember to position the magazine correctly in the support hand as you load it to ensure there is ammo in the magazine and the top round situated properly.

If cycling the slide three times doesn’t bring the gun back into battery, don’t keep trying. There may be a bullet in the bore and attempting to load the pistol over and over can force the bullet far enough down the barrel that eventually you will be able to chamber a round. Attempting to fire the pistol with a bullet lodged in the barrel will be ugly. When the pistol goes puff and there’s no recoil stop immediately and go to your backup. Chances are you have a squib load. The bullet had enough pressure to drive it part way down the barrel but not all the way out.

How much you practice manipulations, particularly the functional actions, depends on your intended application. For general range shooting sessions these are good skills to have. For competition, knowing how to perform a smooth reload will give you a better score. In a lethal encounter, the ability to clear a malfunction efficiently under stress in the dark while moving is mandatory. For those who carry a handgun, it’s critical to learn the manipulations to the point that they become a subconscious process you don’t have to think about. Regardless of why you own pistols, your task, as with any other tool, is to learn how to operate it properly.

Middle Ground

All this talk amongst some politicians about finding the middle ground. I guess they are unaware, that on a marine chart, the term "middle ground" refers to a shoal area in a marked channel. In fact, I'm sure that some of them are unaware of the hazard. The marine navigator knows to avoid the "middle ground", to avoid getting hung up. It's pretty difficult to get out of the middle ground once you wander in there.

Gun Crimes Plummet - As Gun Sales Rise

Tropical Weather

The "Erin's"

As Erin 2013 starts its journey accross the Atlantic, we can compare it to its namesakes, Erin 1995 that visited us 18 years ago, and Erin 2001.

Erin (1995) formed from a tropical wave that crossed from the coast of Africa to the tropical eastern Atlantic Ocean on 22 July 1995.

On the evening of the 31st, Erin became a hurricane while centered near Rum Cay in the Bahamas.

Erin made landfall around 0600 UTC on the 2nd near Vero Beach, Florida as a Category 1 hurricane on the Saffir/Simpson Hurricane Scale, with estimated maximum one-minute wind speeds of 75 knots.

Erin's track bent back to west-northwest while the cyclone crossed the Florida peninsula during the morning and early afternoon of the 2nd. The cyclone weakened to a tropical storm with 50-knot winds during that period, but remained well-organized. Upon emerging into the eastern Gulf of Mexico, Erin reintensified on a track that gradually swung back to northwestward at about 10 knots. Final landfall occurred near Pensacola, Florida during the late morning of 03 August 1995. An eye had redeveloped but upper-level outflow was not particularly impressive on satellite images. Erin had around 85 knot winds (Category 2) in a small area of its northeastern eyewall when that part of the hurricane came ashore near Fort Walton Beach in the western Florida panhandle.

erin95track

Erin 2001 took a different path.

Erin (2001) can be traced back to a tropical wave that emerged from western Africa on 30 August.

By 5 September, southwesterly shear caused the tropical cyclone to degenerate into an area of disturbed weather.

About a day later, a surface circulation re-developed in the northern part of the area of disturbed weather that was associated with Erin. The re-generated tropical depression moved north-northeastward, then north-northwestward, and regained tropical storm strength about 550 n mi north-northeast of the northern Leeward Islands at 1800 UTC 7 September.

Erin strengthened into a hurricane late on the 8th. While passing east of Bermuda on the 9th, Erin continued to strengthen, and it reached its peak intensity of 105 kt around 1800 UTC that day. A few hours later, the eye of the hurricane passed within about 90 n mi east-northeast of Bermuda, which was Erin's point of closest approach to the island.

After brushing Bermuda, the hurricane continued to move mainly toward the north...

There's no place like home!

Family of Five Rescued

August 12, 2013 – Chile

The Gastonguay family were reportedly frustrated with the U.S. government, so Sean, 30, and Hannah, 26, decided to move their family to the remote island nation of Kiribati by sailing there. They never made it.

In an interview with the Associated Press on Saturday after their arrival in Chile, Hannah says the family traveled from Arizona to San Diego in November to move aboard a sailboat — on which she gave birth — and set sail in May. Details are sketchy, but Hannah reported that the family — including their 3-year-old and now-8-month-old daughters, and Sean's father Mike — suffered "gale after gale" during the first couple of weeks and somehow damaged the boat. They claim to have drifted for 91 days without propulsion because they were afraid that setting the genoa would dismast the boat. They were finally rescued by a Venezuelan fishing vessel and transferred to a Japanese cargo ship, which delivered them to San Antonio, Chile.

None of the family were injured during the ordeal, and there's no word on if the boat was scuttled or is still afloat. Indeed, in news reports there's not even mention of exactly where the rescue occurred. Flights home for the family — who were fed up with paying taxes for services they didn't approve of — were arranged by the U.S. Embassy.

Polar View™

I grew up in the analog era when things were still done "the old fashioned way", and new technology was usually acquired, or retro-fitted, one step at a time.

With the digital generation came (gizmology?) an almost overwhelming onslaught of multi-function, multi-tasking, multi-this, and multi-that products. It was easy enough to get confused when things worked right; when they didn't work right, or induced operator error crept in, it could be costly.

The July 1956 collision between the Stockholm and Andrea Doria was a costly lesson in how NOT to use the new (at that time) technology RADAR. Over the years, we've seen enough specious offerings, in the name of "technology", to justify making a very conservative approach when adapting electronic marine navigation and electronic chart display and information systems (ECDIS.)

The industry has matured to the point that we can presume accuracy, and evaluate these systems by their simplicity and cost. Though, I still don't trust 'systems' until they have successfully achieved a couple of years of 'maturity'. Polar View™ is one of a few that seem to fit the bill.

Nice — but I'm still prepared to do things "the old fashioned way."

Gun Control

Locking up S&W

It's 2013, and many of us have automobiles that can sense our presence, and obediently unlock, by communicating with a transponder in our pocket. So, if we don't need a key for our automobiles anymore, why should we want to mess with a key when using a gun? The answer, of course, is that we don't — nor did we ever. And no, I'm not advocating putting transponders on guns! There are ways to safely secure a firearm without putting an unsightly and cumbersome key slot in the side plate. Why then are there key locks on Smith & Wesson guns? Here's the story.

Solar Dynamics

Sun Will Flip

The sun is gearing up for a major solar flip, NASA says.

In an event that occurs once every 11 years, the magnetic field of the sun will change its polarity in a matter of months, according to new observations by NASA-supported observatories.

"It looks like we're no more than three to four months away from a complete field reversal,"

Those of us who rely on a magnetic compass to find our way around here on earth appreciate the dynamics of the earth's magnetic field. Navigator's refer to the difference between "True" direction and "Magnetic" direction (at a given location) on earth as "variation." Knowing the difference, and the annual rate of change, is important when using a magnetic compass to determine direction. What does this have to do with the sun? Nothing, but it reminds us that nothing remains the same, and we constantly have to allow for change. The earth's magnetic field is constantly changing, and it is said that earth's polarity will eventually reverse. Fortunately, we don't have to deal with a polarity reversal every 11 years here on earth.

A 'complex' problem

"No excuse, but......"

We used to identify the kind of pretensive rhetoric exhibited in this video as an "inferiority complex." Today, its ramification is being hustled as "racism." I say "hustled" partly because, left to itself, the complex would fade away into clear air, and the real problem could be seen by all for what it is.

On the Tuesday night (August 6, 2013) Tonight Show, the president of the United States admitted that young black American's are "disproportionately" prone to violent criminal behavior, but then he went on to admonish public scrutiny of the problem, and finally to blaming our laws — for causing confrontation?.

We have no inferior race, or inferior people, in this nation, but there definitely is a problem, and the problem has a solution. But it appears that the POTUS doesn't have a clue on where to start.

Does this mean that we can look forward to more cases like the recent one in Sanford, Florida?

With rising inflation and health-care costs, more and more people cannot afford the risk that outlaw's pose — nor will they willingly assume that risk.

Mayors Against Illegal Guns

How They Operate

I’m the mayor of Walden, NY, just starting my third term. In 2009, while attending a statewide mayoral conference, I was asked to sign a “petition” affirming my support for safer communities. I signed, because who would not be for safer communities? What I found out later is that my name was being used in anti-gun propaganda to further the personal agenda of [New York City] Mayor Bloomberg.

The organization never asked for permission or asked for approval to use my name to promote their agenda. Never was any information disclosed to me about the organization being in favor of gun control or that they would use my position as Mayor to spend millions of dollars to try to take away the rights of legal gun owners. I, like several other Mayors around the country were defrauded by Bloomberg and MAIG.

Once I learned of their deceptive ways, it took several months to contact the organization as they concealed information about the people behind the group. After several attempts and requests to be removed, I did finally receive a call from a representative of the organization attempting to “buy me off” by promising political donations in return for my continued membership.

It was not until I declined this payoff, that my name was finally removed.

Tropical Weather: The ECMWF Model

Best Hurricane Predictor?

By Scott Jones

When the next big hurricane threatens the East Coast, maybe U.S. boaters should look to Europe when faced with decisions about whether to move their vessels or have them hauled. According to the Associated Press news agency, the European hurricane prediction model accurately predicted Hurricane Sandy’s landfall four days before the U.S. Hurricane Center got it right. In fact, the European model has proved more accurate over a three-year period.

In order to track hurricanes and predict their behavior, weather centers rely on supercomputers that can solve mathematical equations based on models.

The accuracy of different models varies however, and some frequently outperform others. In 2012, this disparity in accuracy came into the spotlight when the National Hurricane Center and the European Center for Medium-range Weather Forecasting model gave largely different projections for the path of Hurricane Sandy. (Tracks developed by the European model are often labeled with the acronym for the European Center, ECMWF.)

Sandytracks

When you see a hurricane track modeling forecast, look for the initials ECMWF, acronym for the European weather center that has generated the most accurate hurricane tracks during the past three years.

Greater accuracy on the part of the European model is fairly typical. Weather Underground reports that it was the single best performing model in 2010 and 2009 when it out-performed the National Hurricane Center. In 2010, it outperformed the Hurricane Center 3-day and 4-day forecasts, and in 2009, for 4-day and 5-day forecasts. Much of the model’s spike in accuracy reportedly came from improvements made to the model in 2006.

The two main U.S. forecasting computers, one in Orlando and the other in Reston, Va., are also underpowered, according to the AP. They will receive $25 million in upgrades as part of the Hurricane Sandy supplemental bill that was recently approved by Congress. Even with the upgrade however, the European model may still be more accurate. Performance of the models in general is affected by the types and amounts of data put into the models initially. For now, the European model is still the most accurate.

A forecast using the European Model can be found here. The forecast is updated at 8 am and 8 pm EST in the summer, and at 7 am and 7 pm EST in the winter.  You can also view ECMWF forecasts by going to weatherundeground.com and go WunderMap with the model layer turned on. Activate the ECMWF layer.

For 2013, NOAA has predicted an above-normal active hurricane season in the Atlantic, which start[ed] June 1 and ends on November 30. NOAA has estimated a 70 percent chance of 13-20 named storms, seven to 11 hurricanes and three to six major hurricanes. The organization does not make official predictions on the hurricane landfall outlook, but with the increased storm frequency comes an increased likelihood of landfall.

For the Eastern Pacific it predicts a 55 percent chance of having a below average season. It has estimated a 70 percent chance of 11-16 named storms, five to eight hurricanes, and one to four major hurricanes.
