North Atlantic Weather

Memories of Ocean Station

The proposed track of Hurricane Sam will take the storm pretty close to where we used to patrol when on Ocean Station Charlie. The center of our station was located at 52°45’N, 35°30’W, on the "Gander-Shannon" Great Circle route between Europe and North America—a popular trade route for both ships and aircraft.

We encountered weather similar to Sam while on Ocean Station in the early 1960’s. It usually meant that we had a lot of repair work to do when we got back to our home port in Norfolk, Virginia.
