Personal protection

Riots Break Out Between Black, Latino Students At Victorville School

“The cops are nowhere to be seen. We’ve been calling them. They took forever. 911 placed people on hold. It was ridiculous,”

You say that you don't rely on the government for help. Well, guess what, the police are just another government agency. Do you rely on them for your personal safety?

We've been urging for some time now that it's best to not rely on the police for protection from a feral element that is becoming more mobile and unpredictable. The police do the best that they can, but in many cases they cannot save you from violent attack. Every citizen should consider both proactive and reactive strategies to deal with an emboldened feral element, without having to rely on help from the police. Don't worry, the police will eventually arrive at the scene, and in their capacity as 'armed historian's, will write up the facts. It's your responsibility to provide them with the truthful facts; and that will be easier to do if you are alive and well. Defense is something that takes preparation and practice. The time to start thinking about it is yesterday.

Then, you won't be so debilitated when you hear something like this:

Survival

"I'm not going to die here!"

When the 28-foot aluminum boat Ryan Harris and a crewmate were fishing from was swamped by a wave and capsized last Friday off Sitka, Alaska, both wound up in the icy water miles offshore.

"We had no radio or cell phones."

Hallelujah!

Flashlights

Surefire P2X

Having owned several Surefire flashlights, I can attest to their durability and reliability in the marine environment. Along comes a model they call a "pocket-sized searchlight."

According to Surefire, "the P2X Fury uses a high-efficiency, virtually failure-proof LED to deliver your choice of either 15 or 500 lumens of perfectly focused light, the latter qualifying the Fury as a pocket-sized searchlight. The 15-lumen level is excellent for general work at close-to-medium distances, and also lets you greatly extend the runtime per set of batteries, a valuable option when you're miles from civilization. At either setting the high-strength polymer micro-textured reflector delivers a smooth, comparatively wide beam with a brighter central area and generous peripheral light. The Fury is activated with a click-type tailcap switch: press for momentary-on low, press further to click constant-on low; return to off and press or click on again within two seconds for high. The high-strength aerospace aluminum body is smoothly sculpted for a comfortable, secure grip and is hard anodized to military specifications for extreme resistance to scratches, abrasion, and corrosion."

Sounds like just the thing for those dark nights on the water.

Fantastique!

L'Hydroptère

When I hit 7 knots in any of the monohulls that I'm used to sailing, I'm satisfied. Square that speed and add a couple of knots for good measure and you have the 51 knot l'Hydroptère, "the fastest sailboat in the world."

Freedom

The American Way

Every citizen of the United States of America has the inalienable right to keep and bear arms. However, there are a few people who lack the discipline necessary to keep and bear arms safely. We see examples in the news of a few people who cannot or will not, for whatever reason, behave responsibly. This is a good enough reason for everyone else to be armed.

What to do about the problem of misuse? Enforce the law; we have enough of them on the books already.

In one of Aesop's fables, a conference of mice decided that the best way to deal with a marauding cat was to put a bell on the cat so they could tell when it was approaching. Their plan broke down when the mice couldn't find a volunteer to tie the bell to the cat.

Innocent people have always suffered from the work of criminals, but penalizing the masses for the misdeeds of a few is not 'the American way' of doing things.

Somebody has to 'bell the cat.'

While pondering the dilemma of removing miscreants from our society without penalizing everyone else, I got to thinking about cutting horses. If you've ever watched a good cutting horse work, you know exactly what I mean. It's a thing of efficient beauty; poetry in motion!

The rider selects the quarry out of the crowd; a good horse will know which one you want. Then hang on.

Keep your shoulders over the saddle.

2012 National Party Platform Stance On Citizen

The nitty-gritty

Litmus Test

The term "litmus test" is often used as a metaphor for something that's of value when making decisions involving complex issues. I have long held that the 2nd Amendment to our Constitution can be used as a litmus test to indicate the value that a person places on liberty, freedom, and civil rights. When the same test is applied to a political party, the results are even more profound. There are certainly other issues to be considered during an election cycle, but the right guaranteed by the 2nd Amendment is paramount. Thanks to the recent publication of the 2012 Democratic and Republican political party platform statements, we don't have to guess at how each of them value our freedom to keep and bear arms.

Firearm Technology

2012 Synopsis

Tom Gresham has put together a good audio (mp3) synopsis of the current state of firearm technology. He includes comments on bullet design, which is important when considering what ammunition will work best for a particular application. More research will be required, on your part, to delve into the particulars of what he covers, but his 'briefing' can help get a person started in the right direction.

AR-15

Remember Rule 1

If you are one of the many people who have an AR-15, you might want to review this safety reminder from Tod Jarrett and Rich Grassi.

"The AR (carbine) has a floating firing pin."
Dropping the bolt on a loaded magazine causes the firing pin to jump forward as the bolt slams home. Didn't know that?

"After you fired a few rounds, take the magazine out and clear the chamber. Check the round that came out of the chamber. The primer has a small dimple. The firing pin actually hit it."

For that reason, ALWAYS charge the AR15 with the muzzle pointed in a safe direction.

A properly maintained firearm with good ammunition will probably never  accidentally fire when the bolt drops — but.... (you can fill in the rest.)

Sine-bar Rifling Machine

Rifling a Gun Barrel

This from The Truth About Guns:

[H]ere is computer animation of a “cut” rifling machine, showing all the parts and how it works. “Cut” rifling does the lands and grooves one pass at a time as opposed to “broach” rifling that cuts all of them at the same time. Then there’s “button” rifling which simply presses the rifling into the barrel. Another option is “hammer forging” where the barrel is placed over a mandrel with the negative image of the lands and grooves and then pounded to fit the mandrel, transferring the image to the inside of the barrel.

Home Security

Verona man shoots intruder

Earl Jones had just turned off his new TV shortly after 2 a.m. Monday when he heard a bang in the basement.

The 92-year-old Boone County farmer walked eight paces to get his loaded .22 caliber rifle from behind the bedroom door. He unwrapped a beige cloth and returned to the living room, sitting in a chair with clear view – and shot – of the basement door, waiting with the gun across his lap.

Some 15 minutes later, when he heard footsteps moving closer up the stairs, he raised the rifle to his eye. The intruder kicked open the door. Jones fixed his aim on the center of the man’s chest and fired a single shot. The Boone County Sheriff later announced the death of the intruder, Lloyd (Adam) Maxwell, 24, of Richmond, Ky.

“These people aren’t worth any more to me than a groundhog,” Jones told the Enquirer. “They have our country in havoc. We got so many damned crooked people walking around today.”

Beside being a most heinous crime, home invasion is a forceable felony, and a vigorous armed defense is the best way to deal with the perpetrator. In this case we have a 92-year old man, in his home, who is able to deal with a disparity of force successfully. This is exactly what guns are for.

Getting it right!

"Gun ownership is responsible citizenship..."

Thanks to Dave Hardy at the Of Arms and The Law website for posting a word-for-word comparison of the last five GOP platform statements regarding the party's view of the civil rights issue concerning a citizens' right to keep and bear arms. I agree with Dave's estimation that we won't ever see anything as accurate and candid as this year's GOP plank coming from the DNC. A reason in comparing only the GOP statements is to point out that even the GOP had to struggle to get it right, and they seem to be headed in the right direction for a change.
