NICS Background Checks Up 20.6 Percent

When a person buys a gun from a licensed dealer, by law a mandatory National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) is run on the prospective purchaser. NICS checks are also run for other reasons in some cases. The National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) has come up with a way to adjust the NICS number to better reflect the actual number of firearms being sold.

The May 2012 NSSF-adjusted NICS figure of 840,412 is an increase of 20.6 percent over the NSSF-adjusted NICS figure of 696,947 in May 2011.

This marks the 24th straight month that NSSF-adjusted NICS figures have increased when compared to the same period the previous year.

At least a part of the economy is staying strong.
